How to determine the product carbon footprint
Since the beginning of 2024, companies have had to apply the European Union's new sustainability directive and determine the emissions impact of their products. In addition to the ERP system, the classmate PLAN software from simus systems can calculate the expected manufacturing costs and the product carbon footprint of in-house manufactured products. This can be used to improve development decisions and provide valuable information for sustainability reports.
Sustainability is becoming an essential factor for manufacturing companies. Large companies will have to apply the new EU Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) from 2024 - small and medium-sized enterprises will have to follow suit from 2025. First and foremost, design and development are required to focus on more sustainable products and reduce the product carbon footprint. These areas define around 80 percent of future manufacturing costs and are therefore likely to be responsible for a large proportion of the expected emissions. But how do you take stock and determine the CO2 impact of products according to recognized rules?
The simus classmate software calculates both the future manufacturing costs and the product carbon footprint of mechanically manufactured components and assemblies, including post-treatment, reliably and transparently. The relevant data is automatically obtained from individually customizable raw material and technology databases and is already available during the design of components. The manufacturing costs for each CAD model are displayed by batch size, including the cost drivers. The processing-related energy consumption is also displayed according to the current energy mix and the impact on emissions is mapped. Even the different machine states during production are taken into account. With clear displays, cost and environmentally conscious product development is possible without additional effort. Design engineers finally have all the information they need to make responsible development decisions.
