An Engineer's Guide to Selecting a Flow Restrictor

A flow restrictor, also referred to as a flow limiter, is any device that restricts or limits the flow of a fluid—generally a liquid or a gas. They are used in systems we encounter daily such as controlling how fast water flows from a faucet, how quickly foam sprays from a bottle of carpet cleaner, and how much fuel is flowing into the engine of a car.

Engineers tasked with managing fluid flow in critical applications must understand what needs to be considered when selecting a flow restrictor to make sure the device selected will operate reliably and with precision to enable a system to perform as intended.

This eBook was written by engineers to highlight selection criteria that engineers should consider when determining a flow restrictor to use in a fluidic system.
