Solenoid Valve Basics: What They Are, What They Do, and How They Work

When evaluating a solenoid valve for use within a particular application, it is important to ensure that the valve can both remain in state and transition between its de-energized and fully energized states under all potential operating conditions. To accomplish this, a design engineer must identify all forces that will be applied to the valve components over its intended life cycle. By calculating the combination of forces using a force balance equation, an engineer can determine if the valve will behave as intended. As the number of ports, flow paths, and operating conditions become more complex, so do the calculations necessary to develop the valve.

In this whitepaper, we will cover:

·         Forces that impact the performance of a solenoid valve

·         Basic force balance equations (including sample scenarios)

·         How you can increase the strength of a magnetic field
