East Providence, RI – September 1, 2013 – Unloading ships, turning pallets, tracking solar panels, moving sensitive electronics components from one workstation to another or aligning radio telescopes: all of these applications require rotational movements. This often presents design engineers with the major challenge of supplying rotary movements with a wide range of energy, signal and media supply lines, all at the same time. igus® has now introduced three new solutions for circular movements which supplement the modules for rotational movements in a way that can be applied in almost any application.

Routing different cables in small spaces
igus introduced the new e-spool cable carrier for designers and engineers looking for space-saving Energy Chain solutions, a system for replacing cable drums. The system links two different Energy Chains in a unique way: a standard Energy Chain from the E2 or E4 series is routed via a spool and – thanks to the integrated return spring – ensures the correct length and tension of the Energy Chain remains constant. In its initial position, the chain is compactly wound up. The TwisterBand then connects the spool with the shaft bracket, which serves as the interface to permanently installed cables. In classic cable drums this task is usually taken over by sliding contacts. The e-spool concept is far more flexible because in contrast to sliding contacts, cables for data, compressed air and fluids can be connected without interruption and can be replaced or modified at any time. The TwisterBand provides sufficient space for cable diameters of up to 0.63 inches (16 mm). If more space is required, the TwisterBand can route cables to both sides of the chain drum.

These concrete advantages make the e-spool a complete modular replacement for classic cable drums. In addition, the e-spool can be just the right solution when space is tight: additional space for storing the chain, as is the case with freely suspended or zigzag applications, is no longer required. The e-spool becomes a truly multi-dimensional solution when three-dimensional chains such as the igus’ Triflex® are used – in this case Energy Chains can supply in any direction. The e-spool can be used in lifting platforms, sorting lines, mobile cranes, platform applications or assembly or process cranes with grippers.

Rotary movements up to 900 degrees
Thanks to igus’ reverse bending radius" (RBR) system, Energy Chains can be used for circular movements. With the chains lying on their side and routed through specially divided channel structures, circular movements of up to 600 degrees are possible. One end of the Energy Chain is connected to the inner ring, one to the outer ring. One of these rings is fixed, the other rotates. In order to achieve even larger rotary angles, igus design engineers have presented the new product MRM (Multi-Rotation Module), which makes it possible to implement much larger rotations on the basis of standard Energy Chains with a rearward bending radius and suitable divided guide channels.

Several individual systems are stacked on top of one another and connected into a complete system. The maximum rotation of the individual levels can simply be added together. This makes rotary movements of up to 900 degrees and more possible. The principle is extremely simple: after the defined rotary angle of the lower ring has been reached, the next-higher module is carried along means of a simple stop system. This means that the whole system only requires one control unit. The ingenious but simple set-up reduces possible sources of interference. This makes the MRM system suitable for rotary applications where high loads and rough environmental conditions are the order of the day, such as where stackers, reclaimers, bucket excavators and rotary cranes are used or for offshore applications. In contrast to sliding contacts, the Energy Chain can also be used to route lines for air, gas or fluids as well as bus cables or fiber optic cables. In addition, the light-weight polymer Energy Chains save a great deal of weight compared with steel solutions available on the market and are characterized by outstanding durability. The maximum speeds currently reached are up to 3 f/s – more is possible, depending on the size.
