Plastic Bearings Meet FDA and EU Directives

igus® unveils two new polymer bearing materials for the food industry.

East Providence, RI – September 1, 2013 – The two new high-performance tribopolymers—iglide® A181 and the lower cost iglide A160—meet both US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) guidelines and EU directives for the food industry. Thanks to their high abrasion resistance, low moisture absorption and resistance to chemicals, both materials are suitable for applications that involve direct contact with food.

iglide A181 is the new-improved version of igus’ high-performance and FDA-compliant material iglide A180. iglide A181 meets the stringent requirements of EU directive 10/2011, permits a maximum surface pressures of 3,626 psi and short-term temperatures up to 230 degrees Fahrenheit. In dry-running applications, maximum long-term rotational speeds up to 2.6 feet per second and linear speeds up to 11.5 feet per second are possible.

New low-cost iglide A160 also conforms to FDA regulations and EU directive 10/2011 and is resistant to a wide range of acids and solvents. This makes it ideally suited to applications in the food and packaging industries, where aggressive chemicals are often used for wash-downs to ensure high standards of hygiene. The new bearing material offers long life at low cost and combines low friction values with excellent wear and chemical resistance. This makes A180 the perfect wear-resistant alternative to simple plastic bushings made from generic plastics.

Tribologically optimized and rigorously tested in the igus test laboratory, the two new bearings are the latest in a long line of lubrication-free, cost-effective plain bearings from igus—a company that has been actively developing innovative polymer bearing materials for the past 30 years.
